French press brewing highlights body and texture, making it especially rewarding for coffees with chocolate, nutty, and deeper flavor notes.

What You Need

French press is one of the simplest and most rewarding brew methods. It asks for very little equipment and gives back a satisfying, full cup.

Coffee to Water Ratio

A solid starting point is 1:15.

For example, use 24g of coffee with 360g of water. This often produces a richer cup with lovely depth and body.

Grind Size

Use a coarse grind.

This helps reduce bitterness and makes plunging cleaner. A grind that is too fine can lead to sludge and over-extraction.

Step by Step

French press is simple, but small details improve the final cup dramatically.

1. Preheat the press

Rinse the French press with hot water to warm the glass and keep brew temperature more stable.

2. Add coffee grounds

Place your coarsely ground coffee into the empty press and level it gently.

3. Pour hot water evenly

Pour in your water steadily so all grounds become saturated. Start your timer.

4. Stir gently

After the first 30 seconds, give the brew a gentle stir to make sure all the grounds are properly immersed.

5. Place the lid on top

Set the plunger on the press without pushing it down. Let the coffee steep for about 4 minutes.

6. Press slowly

Push the plunger down gently and steadily. Avoid pressing too hard or too fast.

7. Serve immediately

Pour the coffee out soon after plunging so it does not continue extracting and become bitter.

Tips for a Better Cup

Do not let brewed coffee sit in the press too long after plunging. Pour it into your cup or a carafe to preserve balance and softness.

French press is excellent for coffees with chocolate, caramel, toasted sugar, nutty notes, and a comforting round texture.
